Evaluating the growth of fall armyworm larvae feeding on four weed species


秋行軍蟲(Spodoptera frugiperda, J.E.Smith)為原生於美洲的鱗翅目(Lepidoptera)夜蛾科(Noctuidae)害蟲,聯合國糧農組織將此蟲列為全球重要農業害蟲之一。我國於2019年6月發現第一例入侵案件。由於秋行軍蟲具有很廣的寄主範圍,但我國主要受害作物仍僅以玉米及高梁為主。秋行軍蟲是否可以利用田間雜草做為代用寄主進行擴散目前不得而知。本研究旨在了解秋行軍蟲在臺族群是否可以利用雜草物種完成生活史,故選擇數種田間常見且難防除的雜草物種做為測試對象。實驗結果顯示,秋行軍蟲無法在大花咸豐草(Bidens pilosa L.)、刺莧(Amaranthus spinosus L.)、野牽牛(Ipomoea obscura L.)、菟絲子(Cuscuta austras)等四種試驗的雜草中完成世代史。

Parallel abstracts

Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith, FAW) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a destructive pest native to the Americas. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations named this insect species as one of global agriculture pests. In Taiwan, FAW was first found in June, 2019. The FAW is a generalist insect pest. However, FAW mainly is found in corn and sorghum field in Taiwan. It is unknown that FAW would use common weed in the field as alternative host. This study aimed to understand whether FAW population in Taiwan would feed on common weeds to complete its life cycle. We chose four hard to control weeds as tested plant species. Our results showed that invaded FAW in Taiwan cannot complete the life cycle on four tested weed species (Bidens pilosa L., Amaranthus spinosus L., Ipomoea obscura L., and Cuscuta austras).
