Taiwan's First Alpine Academic Expedition - Honda Seiroku's Yushan Adventures

In 1896, Japanese forestry professor Honda Seiroku and others explored Mount Morrison (now Yushan) with the support of the Tokyo Imperial University's academic expedition program. They climbed to the summit through the Patungkuan trail built during the Qing Dynasty. The investigation data from the forests in Taiwan formed part of Honda's doctoral dissertation. He published a new statement on the botanical geography of the Japanese Empire. His theories, methods, and research results expanded the scope of the so-called "Japanese" forest plant belts (including Ryukyu and Taiwan) in contemporary Japanese academia. During the climb, he also observed the forestry situation in Taiwan, providing insights into the distribution of camphor, improvement in the camphor industry, and research and utilization of timber resources. He suggested Tokyo Imperial University establish an experimental forest here. Thus, the Taiwan Experimental Forest of Tokyo Imperial University was established in 1902. After World War II, the Taiwan Experimental Forest was taken over by National Taiwan University and is now The Experimental Forest, National Taiwan University. We also conducted a field survey to reconstruct the route Hondo took during these years to verify changes in time and space using historical sites and documents.
