Diversity of the Swimming Crabs (Crustacea: Brachyura: Portunidae) from Dongsha Island, with A New Record from Taiwan
東沙島的梭子蟹多樣性與臺灣的新紀錄種
摘要
The crab species of the family Portunidae are a diverse group in marine environments in which they inhabit estuaries, rocky shores, and coral reefs in the intertidal and subtidal zones. Dongsha Island, located in the northern South China Sea, has various habitats with high diversity of portunids. Previously, 20 species belonging to nine genera in this family were reported from the island. Based on the collections of six surveys on this island from February to November 2019, as well as other specimens collected previously, 18 species were identified, along with an additional two undetermined species, Xiphonectes aff. iranjae and Trierarchus sp. Among them, Thranita helleri (Hoffmann, 1874) is a new record species from Dongsha Island and Taiwan and is described. The photographs of the 20 species and their ecological notes from Dongsha Island are provided. Regarding the portunid species composition on Dongsha Island, the northern coast of the island has the highest diversity (14 species), followed by the southern coast of the island (12 species). In contrast, the southern coast of the Small Lagoon and the pond beside the airport have the lowest diversity, with only one species collected from each region.
