The halfbeaks or viviparous halfbeak are marine and freshwater fishes with modified dorsal fin and anal fin rays in adult male, and are species-specific characters. Before this study, there were two species recorded around Taiwan, e.g., Zenarchopterus buffonis and Z. dunckeri Mohr, 1926. In this paper, species taxonomic account and distribution of the genus Zenarchopterus were documented. One newly recorded species Z. dispar (Valenciennes, 1847) was redescribed and it is common in southwestern Taiwan, and together sympatric distributed with Z. buffonis, these two species are the northernmost distribution globally. Geographic extension northward was observed. However, Z. dunckeri was not seen during the study. A key to the species of Taiwan, synopsis, color photographs, and redescription for Zenarchopterus species are provided.
