This paper aims to explore the relationship between word and image based on Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's important work on aesthetics Laocoon, published in 1776. The discussions start from that Lessing used two different categories "artificial sign" and "natural sign" to differentiate between word and image in Laocoon. However, this differentiation is not meant to define the relationship between word and image as clear-cut, but to point out the power of imagination with its internal activity of spirit or mind. That imagination plays an important role in this context reflects the medial-cultural background in the 18^(th) century: the wide spread und general application of the medium of writing, a well-functioning model of communication based on the universal practice of writing and reading. Under such circumstances, both writers and readers are inclined to make use of imagination to create scenes in mind that vividly depict persons, actions and events as if they were real and present. This serves as the starting point of considering the relationship between word and image as intermedial.
