|The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics of the non-hypothetical usage of "to" and "tara" in Japanese narrative writing. By comparing the usage of these two words in empirical, observational and comic narratives, it was found that 1) the frequency of non-hypothetical usage of "to" and "tara" was highly correlated with the writing style of the text, 2) the narrative point of view was reflected in preceding predicate verb, and 3) the sentence endings varied depending on whether the narrative point of view was with the narrator or not. Based on these findings, this study further suggests the importance of clarifying the non-hypothetical usage of "to" and "tara" in relation to point of view when practicing narrative writing.
