Age and growth of pike eel Muraenesox cinereus (Forsskal) in northern Taiwan and Pescadores island were siudied using otolith as materials for age determination. A total of 984 fishes were collected between December 1980 and January 1982. Ages of fishes were found between one and eleven years old. Analysis of covariance indicated significant differences in length-weight relationship between female and male fish as well as those from different areas. Based on the relationship between radius of otolith and body (prenal) length, average length of fish at different ages were estimated, giving a Von Bertalanffy's type of growth curve which is different from those of other reports. The so called Lee's phenomenon was observed in this study.
