Uroteuthis duvauceli is a common bycatch species of torch-light fisheries in Taiwan. We found that the dominant myopsid squid in the southern East China Sea had shifted from U. edulis and U. chinensis to U. duvauceli in a period from September to October 2012. To investigate this change and better understand the life history of this species, the present study collected data including the age, growth, reproduction and spawning grounds of U. duvauceli in the southern East China Sea for the first time. For both male and female U. duvauceli, the observed maximum age was 99 days, indicating a short lifespans. In terms of growth, mantle length with respect to age increase, was best described by a power model for female U. duvauceli and a linear model for males. In addition, we analyzed five population structures of U. duvauceli in three different regions (the inshore water, continental shelf water, and strait water), the results indicated that the strait water and continental shelf are the spawning (> 72% mated) and feeding grounds of U. duvauceli, respectively. Additionally, we also observed that high sea temperature may have caused the observed surge in U. duvauceli abundance.
