模里西斯爲西印度洋中小島,氣候溫暖,雨量充沛,適宜生長亞熱帶果樹,重要者有荔枝、檬果、龍眼、柑桔、香蕉、酪梨、番石榴、鳳梨、可可椰子、木瓜及葡萄。野生者有草莓石榴、印度棗、蒲桃、堇寶蓮,別冬格兒。樹莓、扁櫻桃、羅望子及欖仁等。經濟栽培果園面積不大,一般管理欠善,産量不穩定,主要靠庭園樹生産。荔枝及檬在島內市場已能自足。歷年有小量鮮果銷售英國,南非及法國。
1. Mauritius is a small island situated in the west of Indian Ocean. Its size is approximately one twentieth that of Taiwan. Over the whole island the temperature is warm and the rainfall is experienced all the year round, it shares one of the well know marine climatic characteristics for tropical fruit growing like that of a subtropical country. 2. Fruits of importance are litchi, mango, longan, citrus, banana, avocado, guava, pineapple, coconut, papava and grape; the strawberry guava jujube, rose apple, jambolan (Eugenia jambos), batoko (Flacourtia rhamonti), dew berry (Rubus sp), Surinam cherry (Eugenoa unoflora), tamarind (Tamaeidus indica) and tropical almond (Termina catappa) are growing wild in the natural vegetation. 3. As far as fruit production is concerned, there is no commercial plantation. Few orchards exist on some estates; however, they are not properly managed. All fruits, seen at the maker, are obtained from dooryard trees.
