The hiking accidental events (HAE) over the years in the area of Yushan National Park were mostly happened around the 15 sections of the Yushan-Main-Peak Trail (shortened YMP Trail). An official record showed that acute mountain sickness (AMS), falling off cliff, and getting lost are the major types of HAE which accounts for 40.3%, 28.4%, and 16.4%, respectively, of the total 67 events. The main purpose of this study was to assess the hiking risk on the YMP Trail and also to explore the relationship between environmental factors of the hiking trails and HAE. Results showed that HAE was significantly related to the environmental factors such as altitude, aspect, and slope. Briefly, the AMS occurred mostly at the locations where the trails were within the altitudes 3,000-3,500 m, the south aspect, and the slope around 0-300°. Based on the environmental features derived from the official records of the hiking accidental events, the hiking risk for the fifteen sections of the YMP Trail in Yushan National Park were estimated. A draft of instruction to hiking safety was also proposed by taking account the terrain features of the sections No. 1 and No. 13. This guide should be able to help reducing the probability or the frequency of hiking accidental events in the future.
