The emission issue of volatile organic compounds (VOC) has been taken notice by the public in recent years, because it may change the indoor air quality and affect human health. Biological VOC (BVOC) is one kind of VOC mostly emitted from plant synthesis, which is classified as secondary metabolites. It is called phytoncide when human engage activities in forest. Wood is a biological materials, and has the propensity to emit the volatile content. BVOC is different from the VOC which emit from solvent or coating. Indoor use of wooden ware, flooring, siding, furniture and decorations have the ability to emit the fragrant smell, to sublimate as BVOC. In this review, the VOC emission from softwood is mainly α-pinene and other monoterpenes. The VOC emission from hardwood is not significant, but these are some furan emission when the background temperature is higher. The VOC emissions from woodbased panel is mainly aldehydes. Therefore, the emission status of the wood materials would directly affect the indoor air quality. The emission from wood-based panel mainly contributes to air pollution. The health effect of BVOC emission from solid wood on human should be clarified in the future.
