The anti-termite properties of six imported woods (Shorea spp.) were examined in both block and powder styles by laboratory tests. The weight conservation of wood blocks by termite-attack was affected by wood density and hardness. The mortality of termites fed on wood powder, however, was related to the amount of wood extractives by alcohol-benzene. The commercial utilization of termiticidal chemicals was surveyed by sending questionnaires to 50 termite-control professionals in Taipei. Based on the imformation from the 27 respondents, it was found that the most common termiticide was chlorpyrifos (an organophosphorus compound), while pyrethroid ranked the next. It is important to keep on screening effective, low-polluting termiticidal compounds for the future application.
