The character 隼 is a special member of the character group whose phonetic element is 隹. According to the analysis of phonetic types, 隼 had two phonological variants in received texts, namely 隼 TU (J/N) and 隼 KWIN. Based on excavated documents, 隼 was derived from two functional changes of 隹 and □, both of which were historical variants of 隹. During the first change, which occurred from the Warring States period (especially in Qin and Chu) to the early West Han dynasty, the word function of □ and 隹 had been mutual concentrated, which finally led to the functional division that □ recorded the sound related to the 隼 TU (J/N), while 隹 recorded the counterpart to the 隼 KWIN. In the second change, after the middle period of the West Han dynasty, this functional division faded away, and the function of □ was gradually replaced by 隹. 隼 TU (J/N) is the residue from the □, recording the sound related to 隼 TU (J/N) from the first change. 隼 KWIN resulted from compensation or mutual change of word function during the second change.
