The “girls from outside“ phenomenon began to emerge in the late 1980s after the implementation of the economic reform and opening-up policy had changed the closed situation of mainland Chinese rural areas. Most of such girls came from relatively remote, inland provinces and moved to the eastern coastal areas. For many years, the moving out of peasants from their own place of origin to settle down in other provinces for the sake of marriage has continually enhanced population mobility in the rural areas. Objectively, this kind of moves automatically helps to readjust the sex ratio of the population at marriage age in different rural communities. Subjectively, marriage mobility implies the people's desire for a new life, thereby reflecting the overall trend of changes in rural communities.
