As the founder of Neo-platonism, Plotinus in ancient Rome has, in response to Aristotle's criticism of the infinite regress in Plato's Form theory, coined a hierarchical cosmology in which the world is divided into various levels of being with the One at the top as the cause of all existence. In this cosmology, each level of substance generates the next level of substance. The generation is a special action that is best explained in how the One generates the Intellect. This article elaborates Plotinus' theory of the One's generation of the Intellect by investigating the features of the One as the principle of the generation as well as the key concepts in the theory of generation, dynamis and double activity. In the end, we will conclude the article with the character of Plotinus' concept of generation.
