Two Minor 7,8-Dihydrobenzofurans from Licarin B via Lemieux-von Rudloff Oxidation

PerseaJ G (I) I (7S,8S)-7,8-dihydro-7-(3,4-mefhylenedioxyphenyJ)-l’-formyl-3’-methoxy-8meethylbenzofuranj was previously isolated as a mixture with acuminatin (2) from the stem wood of Machi/us obovatifolia (Lauraceae). For the purpose of structure determination, the spectral data of 1 was compared with the major product following Lemieux-von Rudloff oxidation of liicarin B (3). Two other minor oxidative by-products, 7,8-dihydro-7-(3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl)l’’ –(I –oxo-2-hydroxypropyl)-3’-methoxy-8-methylbenzofuran (1a) and (7S,8S)-7,8-dihydro-7(3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl)-I’ –carboxy-3’ –methoxy-8-methylbenzofuran (1 b), were also obtained. The spectral data and structural elucidation of these two minor products are reported.
