From 25 December 1941 to 15 August 1945, Hong Kong, a British colony since 1842, was captured by Imperial Japan and was being used as a shipping hub of the South China Sea. During the Japanese occupation, the British, Chinese Nationalists, and Chinese Communists all tried to organize underground resistance and intelligence groups in Hong Kong. Previous studies on the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong and the military history of Hong Kong usually focus on resistance activities that were related to the British and the Chinese Communists, without paying too much attention to the larger context of these actions. Using Chinese, British, and Japanese primary sources, some of which unused, this article attempts to fill a gap in the study by reconstructing the Chinese Nationalist Party's resistance and intelligence work in Hong Kong and critically assessing its effectiveness. It suggests that shortcomings in the Nationalist Party's party and military organizations in Guangdong, and a general lack of resources and suitable personnel, explained the failure of the Nationalists organizations to play a greater role in both the war against Japan and the expansion of the party's influence in Hong Kong.
