2483 subjects, aged over 65, received post-anterior chest X-ray examinations. 690 (27.8%) of them were abnormal. Abnormalities were found more frequently among male subjects than among their female counterparts. The older the subjects, the more likely abnormalities were detected. Among all, the most common changes were those resulting from years of wears and tears namely fibrotic calcifications (9.6%) and pleural thickenings (3.0%). The prevalence rate of active pulmonary tuberculosis is 2.4%. The prevalence rate of lung cancer is 0.9%, while that of emphysema is 1.0%. Cardiomegalys were seen in 3.1% of the subjects. Thus, pulmonary tuberculosis, emphysema, and lung cancer remain to be the important lung diseases among the elderly.
