Complications of Motility Coupling Post - Porous Polyethylene Orbital Implant Coupling System

Abstracts

Objective: We report our clinical experience with the Motility Coupling Post (MCP)-porous polyethylene orbital implant (PPOI) coupling system and its complications. Patients and Methods: In this retrospective study, we collected 20 patients who underwent implantation of PPOIs. Twelve patients went on to have an MCP placed. The complications were analyzed. Results: There were no significant complications with PPOIs. All sockets showed good motility. The mean time interval between the implantation and MCP placement was 7.2 months. 4 of 12 patients (33.3%) who underwent MCP placement were found to have problems, including loss of the MCP in the orbital cavity (2 of 12), implant exposure (1 of 12), and MCP drilled on an angle (1 of 12). Conclusions: Implanted MCPs have several potential complications. The most serious problem is loss of the MCP into the orbital cavity. A longer follow-up with a larger number of patients is required to determine the complications of the MCP-PPOI coupling system in humans.
