Myostatin belongs to the TGF-beta superfamily of secreted growth and differentiation factors, being expressed both during embryonic development and in adult muscle. Like most other TGF-beta factors, myostatin appears to be highly conserved across species. Myostatin consists of three exons and two intronic regions in goat species. In this study, the myostatin gene of two breeds of goat with different growth rates and muscular mass were sequenced and compared to identify polymorphisms between these breeds. The myostatin genomic DNA fragments studied in this paper contains the 5' upstream region, were amplified, sequenced, assembled (EF591039). Sequence alignment disclosed 1, 5, 2, 4, 16 and 4 distinct mutations in 5' UTR, exon1, intron1, exon2, intron2 and exon3 respectively, revealing a high level of genetic variation of this gene in goats. L allele (5-bp insertion) appeared predominantly in Boer goat breed, whereas the counterpart S was mainly present in Nei Mongol Cashmere Goat breed. S was undertook more selection pressure than L in meat goat population. The high level of polymorphism of myostatin gene could be used in association studies with important economic traits in goat.
