Thickened Tracheo-Esophageal Stripe-A Sign of Esophageal Tumor on Lateral Chest Radiograph

摘要

The tracheo-esophageal stripe is a very remarkable line, usually seen behind the trachea in the cervical or thoracic region on the lateral chest radiogram. Bachman, in 1969, reported that the stripe was identified in 91% of normal individuals, and usually as a thin band not greater than 3mm, rare greater than 4mm, in thickeness. We reviewed the lateral chest radiogram of 194 patients of carcinoma of the esophagus. The most common original complaint were progressive dysphagia and body weight loss on the lateral chest rediogram, the width of tracheo-esophageal stripe was less than 4mm in 58 cases (29% ) and greater than 4mm in 136 cases (71%). The purpose of this study was aimed to emphasize the significance of the lateral chest radiogram in the diagnosis of carcinoma of esophagus. It is a simple, economic and non-invasive examination. When a characteristic appearance of thickening tracheoesophageal stripe on lateral chest radiogram was demonstrated, in combination with the clinical symptoms of dysphagia and loss of body weight, could lead us to make a diagnosis of carcinoma of esophagus. Then esophagography or endoscopic examination should be performed to comfirm and rule out other mediastinal pathology.
