The nose, located in the center of the human face, can be anatomically divided into the external nose, nasal cavity, and paranasal sinuses. The nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses perform several important physiological functions and are known to be affected by several diseases. Therefore, thorough understanding of the surgical anatomy of these structures is important for optimal treatment of nasal disorders. The nasal cavity is divided into the left and right halves by the nasal septum. The lateral wall of each nasal cavity is a complex structure with curved shelves of bone referred to as turbinates (inferior, middle, and superior) that project into the nasal cavity to create corresponding air passageways (the superior, middle, and inferior meatus) on the outer and lower aspects of each turbinate. The middle meatus plays a key role in the pathogenesis of many sinonasal diseases. The paranasal sinuses are bilateral pairs of air cells surrounding the nasal cavity and include the maxillary, anterior ethmoid, posterior ethmoid, frontal, and sphenoid sinuses. The paranasal sinuses show a highly complicated structure of air cells; therefore, comprehensive understanding of the surgical anatomy of paranasal sinuses determines the outcomes of surgical management of sinus diseases and is also a critical factor that requires attention to prevent complications following sinus surgeries.
