76 phakic eyes of primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment were treated surgically in the ophthalmic department of Kaohsiung Medical College from 1980 to 1983. The study of visual recovery after retinal detachment surgery in a period of 5-year was presented. After the successful operations, visual acuity was found to improve in 75% of 76 eyes. We noted better post-operative visual acuity was found in those macula spared than macula detached. Visual prognoss was related to the duration of the detachment before surgery. However, the longer the retina had been detached, the worse were the visual outcome. It was also found that there were no significant differences in visual improvement between different age, type of tears and operative procedures. Chronological study of visual recovery in a follow-up period of 5 years showed gradual recovery in 6 months of post-operation and no significant changes of visual acuity afterwards. The statistical results of other authors had been compared and the factors influencing the visual outcome and visual results had been discussed.
