By means of directional drilling equipment and borehole survey instrument to control the drilling azimuth and dip, the directional core drilling technique can be applied to drill and take-core along a planned drilling path, straight or curve, in order to investigate the geological and geotechnical conditions. This technique is usually applied in those area where the conventional drilling technique is hard to deal with. The most advantage of directional core drilling technique is that the drilling can be designed to go along a particular path to the foundation where the underground structure will be constructed. In addition, by means of core recovery along borehole path, the geological and geotechnical conditions of the foundation can be clearly understood. The information thus obtained is considered very useful for project planning and design, and can be used as a sound basis to estimate the construction schedule, engineering cost and to select the right construction method.
