The Validation and Nomological Network of the Chinese Version Need to Belong Scale

Introduction: Need to belong is one of the basic psychological needs of humans, and physical activities provide the contexts in which need to belong can be satisfied through interpersonal interactions. Therefore, to have a better understanding of physical activity participation, need to belong is an important psychological factor to be systematically studied. The purpose of this study was to develop a Chinese version of the Need to belong scale (Schreindorfer & Leary, 1996; Leary et al., 2013), via reliability, validity, and nomological network investigation, for future need to belong research in Taiwanese and Chinese-related cultural society. Method: In study 1, the original scale items were translated and back-translated. Exploratory factor analysis, item analysis and test-retest measures were conducted based on data from 177 participants (76 male, Mage = 25.20, SD = 8.94). In study 2, a total of 314 participants (130 male, Mage = 38.77, SD = 10.06) filled in the Chinese version scale. Confirmatory factor analysis, invariance test as well as nomological network approach were utilized to examine the fitness of model, gender-invariance, construct, and criterion-related validities of the scale. Results: The results of study 1 provided preliminary evidences of a single factor structure of the scale, item discrimination, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability. In study 2, the confirmatory factor analysis and nomological network examination confirmed the construct and criterion-related validity and provided further evidences of the psychometric properties of the Chinese version need to belong scale. The nomological network showed that need to belong was associated differently with various personalities and was positively correlated to self-esteem and loneliness to different extent. In terms of behaviors, people who were high in need to belong were correlated with low frequency to engage in solitary activities and tended to have negative emotion when being alone. Conclusions: The Chinese version need to belong scale showed good estimates for reliability and validity, and appeared to be suitable tool for further research in Taiwanese and Chinese society.
