Ridge splitting is a technique to expand the narrow residual ridge by using a chisel or a series of osteotomes. This procedure provides ridge widening with immediate implant placement. When employing this technique, the buccal plate should be carefully displaced. Any trauma to the fragile bony plate may impede the normal bone healing. This paper describes and reviews recent literatures of the bone-splitting procedures and its indications in dental implant surgery. The use of osteotomes specially designed for the bone splitting is illustrated. The clinical effectiveness of implant installed in the split ridge is assessed. The histological events regarding bone healing within the fissure created by splitting technique is discussed.
