Lasers are more widely used in the dental field now, such as treatment of periodontitis or various soft and hard tissue surgeries. In some soft tissue surgeries, dentists can use lasers to replace traditional blades or electrosurgery. The use of lasers in soft tissue surgery may have many advantages, such as sterilization, hemostasis, reducing postoperative pain, or promoting wound healing. In some cases, dental local anesthesia may not require during treatment by using laser, thereby patient's fear toward dental treatment can be reduced. There are many different types of dental lasers with different wavelengths available on the market currently. This review article shows the various lasers commonly used in dentistry and discuss the effects of different lasers on soft tissues and clinical application. In addition, this review article compares the advantages and disadvantages between laser and traditional methods for soft tissue surgery.
