Potential adjunctive effects of diet therapy in patients with periodontitis under non-surgical periodontal treatment

Periodontitis is a common disease with high prevalence among adults and seniors worldwide. It is characterized by chronic inflammation of periodontal tissues which are triggered by the pathogenic bacterial microorganism. Non-surgical periodontal therapy, including scaling and root planing (SRP), had proven to be the treatment of choice for most patients with periodontitis. However, maintaining the therapeutic effects after SRP has often been a difficult task for various reasons such as periodontopathic bacteria remains in the subgingival environment of inaccessible areas such as root concavities, deep periodontal pockets, root furcation and grooves. Several approaches were used as adjunctive therapy to SRP including antibiotics for systemic or local use, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication result in a various degree of success. Nevertheless, the side effects derived from these treatments preclude their long-term use. Considering the efficacy for long-term use, emerging concepts and evidence demonstrate the therapeutic benefit of diets or diets-related products may offer an alternative way to increase or maintain the effects of SRP for patients with periodontitis. This evidence-based review article will provide some clues for these potential approaches.
