Splinting of teeth as a therapy, when part of adjunctive therapy during periodontal treatment, is usually used on teeth that show mobility. This article introduces a definition of splinting therapy, describes the purpose of the therapy and pinpoints the indications for when to use this therapy during periodontal treatment. Tooth splinting is a part of occlusal therapy and we will also discuss the importance of occlusal adjustment after tooth splinting. Factors that affect tooth splinting treatment, as well as the materials and methods used during the splinting treatment are also evaluated in terms of various different treatment goals. When tooth splinting treatment is performed, there can be difficulty maintaining oral hygiene and this can give rise to clinical problems. This article also introduces various adjuvant tools that can be used to maintain oral hygiene when there are splinted teeth. There needs to be careful risk assessment before splinting therapy is begun. However, the most important aspect of the use of tooth splinting is that inflammation and other etiological factors need to be controlled after therapy.
