A Movie Fever in Wartime Chongqing: Chiang Kai-Shek, Charles Chaplin and "The Great Dictator"

After the showing of "Modern Times", Charlie Chaplin, the king of comedy, disappeared from the film industry for three years. But after the hiatus, he regained the attention of the world with his even more astonishing work, "The Great Dictator". This satire of dictatorship was well received in the United Kingdom and the United States, but its release in China was delayed due to political and diplomatic factors. The main reason for this was that there was still a close relationship between China and Germany, and for this reason "The Great Dictator" did not meet its fans in China until 1942.Chinese film journals covered the film during its production, and even though it could not be seen at the same time as the United Kingdom and the United States, Chinese fans were still interested in it. The popularity of the film with Chinese audiences is evidenced by many reports. Chiang Kai-Shek, the leader of China at that time, also watched "The Great Dictator" and left a comment in his diary that he was "very impressed" by it. In this article, I will use Chiang's diary as primary sources, and reference to newspapers and periodicals of the time, to explore this movie fever in China.
