The comparison of face, feather, colon and rectum temperature and plasma electrolytes concentrations between brown-feather and white-feather Tsaiya ducks under the house and sun exposure

The objective of this study is to compare the changes of temperatures taken from face skin, back plumage, colon and rectum, and the plasma electrolytes of brown-feathered and white-feathered Tsaiya ducks under exposure in the barn and the sun. The experiment includes two trials. Ten brown-feathered and 10 white-feathered Tsaiya ducks were put indoors and outdoors in Trial 1 and Trial 2, respectively. The temperatures taken from face skin, back plumage, colon and rectum are measured with an infrared thermal imager or a thermistor probe for 0, 1.5 and 3 hours. In Trial 2, blood is collected from the veins in the wing at the period of 0 and 3 hours after both 10 brown-feathered and 10 white-feathered Tsaiya ducks were exposed under the sun to analyze the concentrations of plasma sodium, potassium, chloride ion and creatinine. Results in Trial 1 shows the temperatures taken from the face skin, back feathers, and colon and rectum of the white-feathered Tsaiya ducks are lower than those of the brown-feathered Tsaiya ducks at most time points (P < 0.05), regardless of birds staying outdoors or indoors. Results in Trial 2 show that the plasma sodium and chloride ion concentrations of brown-feathered Tsaiya ducks after exposure for 3 hours are higher than those before exposure (0 hours), and the increase rate is larger than that of white-feathered Tsaiya ducks (P < 0.05). In summary, based on the temperatures taken from the feathers, facial skin and colon and rectum together with plasma electrolyte concentration, white-feathered Tsaiya ducks may have heat-resistant advantages in feeding and management in hot climates with climate change.
