Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) refers to a constellation of neural and extraneural anomalies and of impaired prenatal or postnatal brain and body growth that occurs in infants born to chronically alcoholic women. We report a case of feral alcohol syndrome who presented with alcohol withdrawal symptoms including abnormal primitive reflexes, agitation, hyperactivity, and tremors for about 60 h after birth. No seizures occurred during hospitalization. The baby received conservative treatment. The mechanism of alcohol withdrawal may involve the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor for the neurotransmitter glutamate. The literature was also reviewed.
