本文皆在暸解，蔣防〈霍小玉傳〉的創作動機，是為攻訐李益之陰私，以為洩憤。然何以仍能給炙人口、歷久不衰？透過對文本的分析，或許可以找出答案。從內容結構、角色刻劃的安排，可以看出蔣防的匠心獨運之處。其高超的藝術技巧，成功地表現出小玉的多情又堅執的個性，及李益輕浮且不負責任的嘴臉，樹立了「多情女子負心漢」的一個典型。讓歷來的讀者垂淚於小玉的癡心，痛恨李益的負心。這正是不論蔣防的創作動機，此傳仍能流傳至今的原因。〈霍小玉傳〉雖然令人感動，但小說仍有描寫不足之處。時至今日，此傳給我們的省思，以不單限於小玉的癡情或李益的負心而已，我們應重新審視現代社會中的男女關係，是否仍存有不公平之處？
