The Private Life of Chairman Mao: The Memoirs of Mao's Personal Physician was written by Dr Li Zhisui in 1994. Since its content is highly sensitive, the book has been banned in China since its publication. In his book Dr Li reconstructs his experience from 1954 until Mao Zedong's death twenty-two years later. He records Mao's private life, which is extremely decadent and dissolute, in his diaries as well as in his memory. He also describes the thrilling and horrifying power struggles among the top Chinese political leaders. I think Mao's private life is completely confidential and thus is hardly able to confirm through research. Therefore this article is not going to comment on this. However, there are numerous erroneous historical events in this book. As the book is based on the Eighth National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the rectification campaigns and the Anti-Rightist struggles, the errors related to these areas are comparatively more serious. On account of this, this paper intends to do a thorough textual research on these historical events. This research is based mainly on Mao Zedong's manuscripts and supplemented by the memoirs of Hu Qiaomu and Wu Lengxi, who are senior Chinese Communist Party cadres. It is the purpose of this article to clarify and rectify these errors so that the readers can master the true nature of these historical events.
