【論文摘要】The Effect of Kinesio Taping on Patients Undergoing Total Knee Arthroplasty: Literature Review

【論文摘要】肌內效貼布對於膝關節置換個案之療效-文獻回顧

摘要

Background and Purpose: The number of patients receiving arthroplasty is increasing. Postoperative edema, pain, muscle strength deficits and proprioception and body balance impacts would affect the functional activities of the patients. Kinesio taping (KT) is introduced by Dr. Kenso Kase and it can be used for improving proprioception and stability, reducing pain and edema, and modulating muscle activity. Therefore, KT is widely used in sports medicine and is preferably applied in patients with musculoskeletal and neurological diseases. Furthermore, we wonder how KT may be helpful to reduce postoperative symptoms after arthroplasty. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of KT on patients undergoing arthroplasty. Methods: The trials published between 2010 and 2020 were searched from the electronic databases of PEDro and PubMed with the key words: KT, Kinesio tape, joint arthroplasty, and joint replacement. We found three full text articles in relation to the topic. Result: Donec et al. in 2014 found KT was beneficial for reducing postoperative pain, edema, improving knee extension in postoperative rehabilitation period in total knee replacement patients. Windisch et al. in 2017 concluded that KT as a lymph application represents an equivalent alternative to the A-V impulse system for therapy after total knee arthroplasty with regard to soft-tissue swelling and wound healing. Wozniak- Czekierda et al. in 2017 concluded both standard physiotherapy and combination therapy with KT in patients after total knee arthroplasty may considerably improve proprioception, body balance and functional performance. Conclusions: The three articles revealed that there were few evidences to show the effectiveness of KT in management of arthroplasty patients. Still, the limited evidences showed positive effectiveness in patients with arthroplasty. Clinical Relevance: The evidences for the use of KT in total knee arthroplasty patients seems positive. KT may be an useful technique for clinical physical therapists to help patients after total knee arthroplasty.
