Vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) generates compensatory eye movements in response to head movements, and thus allowing eyes to continue focusing on an object of interest. VOR is a primary parameter for neurologic function and effective sport performance in ball sports athletes, related to gaze stability and visual acuity. This study aimed to determine the VOR function by monitoring the reaction duration of postrotary nystagmus (PRN) elicited by a rotary chair. Eighteen college ball sports athletes (mean age = 22.1 ± 2.0 years; 6 females and 12 males) and 18 age- and gender-matched college students (non-ball sports athletes, mean age = 21.4 ± 2.1 years; 6 females and 12 males) were recruited in this study. The induction of PRN by vestibular stimulation was adapted to measure the vestibular input during passive head rotation by a rotary chair in both clockwise (CW) and counterclockwise (CCW) directions with a 30-min interval. The reaction duration of PRN after CW and CCW chair rotations was assessed, and changes in heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), and oxyhemoglobin saturation (SpO_2) of the subjects were measured to determine the physical conditions before and after the test. In the results, we found no significant differences in HR, BP, and SpO_2 after CW and CCW rotations compared with measurements before the test in both groups. However, ball sports athletes in both CW and CCW rotations exhibited significantly shorter duration of PRN compared with non-ball sports athletes. We speculate that the faster recovery time of PRN in ball sports athletes may be related to the rapid signal processing in the central nervous system. These findings might have implications for understanding the neurological basis of the visuomotor function that affects performance in ball sports athletes. Further studies are necessary to determine the specific parameters influencing sensorimotor functions of ball sports athletes, which will be taken into consideration when designing a training program.
