Short-term strenuous exercise causes micro-damage and muscle soreness. Sports massage is most commonly used to relieve these symptoms. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the immediate effect of sports massage on ankle muscle stiffness and proprioception after short-term strenuous exercise. For this study, ten elite varsity athletes (aged > 20 years) were recruited. An isokinetic dynamometer was used to measure the passive stiffness of the lower leg muscle and joint reposition error of the ankle joint before the test, following a warm-up and a postexercise intervention for comparisons. Each athlete was warmed up by jogging on a treadmill for 10 minutes. Subsequently, the athletes conducted a strenuous exercise task for 10 minutes. Participants were then treated with Swedish massage and trigger point therapy intervention on the dominant legs (treatment group), and the non-dominant legs as the control group. The results indicated that: no significant difference in muscle stiffness and joint reposition error were observed between the treatment and the control group. In the treatment group, muscle stiffness decreased significantly after warming up, and after the postexercise intervention compared to that before the test. The joint reposition errors were also changed in the both groups but with different reactions. The joint reposition error in the larger plantar flexion position became worse after warm-up in the control group, while that in the middle range of dorsiflexion and plantar flexion after intervention was better than before any exercise in the treatment group. This study concludes that warm-up before strenuous exercise is beneficial to leg muscle stiffness; and sports massage is beneficial to joint kinesthesia recovery after strenuous exercise. These provide evidence for exercise therapists regarding the application of this treatment technique.
