Analysis of Sedentary Behaviors and Physical Inactivity Among Children and Adolescents in France

Abstracts

With the proliferation of digital technologies and screen-based entertainment, the prevalence of sedentary behaviors and physical inactivity among children and adolescents has become a growing concern. The global outbreak of COVID-19 at the end of 2019 represented a turning point in this regard. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the current physical activity level of French youth and the influence of screens on their sedentary behaviors. A qualitative design was employed, utilizing a French case study, and encompassing 15 in-depth interviews with open-ended questions, conducted with two researchers and members of a non-profit organization, one psychologist, two clinical psychologists, two association members, and eight physical education teachers. The interviews were conducted digitally via an online platform and analyzed using content analysis. In addition to interview data, the study also included journal articles, health reports, official documents, and documentaries. Results indicate a marked decline in physical capacity among children and adolescents, attributable to increased sedentary behaviors, and further exacerbated by screen time. This study also emphasizes the necessity for targeted interventions to address physical inactivity through educational institutions, family involvement, and public policy. In conclusion, this study highlights the imperative to address these issues more effectively, brought about by increased screen time and limited outdoor recreation space. The study proposes a collaborative approach between schools, parents and public authorities to implement targeted interventions that promote active living and mitigate long-term health risks.
