Green tea extracts are among the most broadly used ancient (>3,000 years) medicinal agents in man's history while androgens are probably the oldest (>2,000 years) drugs used in purified forms. It is now clear that a specific green tea catechin, (-) epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), can modulate the production and biological actions of androgens and other hormones. Androgens and EGCG can be also useful in treatment of various hormone-related abnormalities such as benign prostate hyperplasia, baldness, and acne, as well as the androgen-dependent and independent prostate cancers. EGCG can also restrict food intake and control obesity and this effect may be dependent of neuropeptide(s) other than leptin.
