Purpose: To elucidate clinical application of Transition Zone Index (TZI)in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients with lower urinary tract symptoms. Materials and Methods: From January 2002 to June 2002, 42 patients with symptomatic BPH were enrolled in this study. All subjects underwent transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) for prostate volume (PV), transition zone volume (TZV)and transition zone index(TZI). The measurements of volume were compared statistically with maximal flow rate (Qmax). Results: There was a significant correlation between of TZI and PV (r=0.423, P<0.01) and between TZI and Qmax (r=-0.502, P<0.01). Conclusion: These studies find a significant correlation between TZI and Qmax (P<0.01). TZI and Qmax provided important information about the clinical obstructive symptoms in patients with BPH, especially for those needing further surgery. TZI was found to be a good specific index in the elucidating the clinical characteristics of BPH.
