This study explored the learning experiences of visual arts students in a studio for their learning motivation, selection criteria, course content and different course orientations, and learners' views of their studio learning. In the study, 24 interviewees described their learning experiences in 55 studios in Taiwan. The findings indicated students' learning motivations included following their parents' expectations, an intrinsic interest in the arts, desire to strengthen their abilities, desire for social interaction, and wanting a suitable place outside of school to create art. Learners chose studios that could meet their needs for growth and were convenient, reasonable, and professional. Reasons for attending studio courses evolved and became more intrinsic and clearer as learners grew. Still life drawing or painting and imitating selected images were typical course content with three stages: negotiation and preparation, art making guidance, and revising artwork based on instructor feedback. Studios that help students prepare for school entrance are different from studios that aim to foster students' art interests and potential. Learning in an art studio can influence students in various ways and the meaning evolves over time. This paper also identifies factors that influence students' learning experiences in art studios and offers suggestions for students, teachers, and further research.
