This case report described the nursing experience of a patient with severe facial and other burns and the adaptation to the injury during the recovery period after critical care in the intensive care unit. From March 29 to April 26 in 2008, the author collected the data through interview, observation, and physical assessment. According to the obtained result, the patient's health problems included: (1) acute pain, (2) impaired physical activities, and (3) body image disturbance. The author established a healthy nurse-patient relationship through listening, initiative care, empathy and support. The author provided nursing interventions such as physical and psychological care, encouraging the patient to express and accept his emotions, distress and inappropriate behavior. Furthermore, the author discussed this with his family, especially with his girlfriend as to how to care for the facial burn scars. In addition, the patient was referred to a social worker, a pastor for advising, and was offered self-care skills to cope with the change in life, increasing the ability to deal with the long-term rehabilitation after discharge.
