Objectives: This study is to investigate the effect of group music therapy on depression and anxiety in acute psychiatric in-patients. Methods: Two groups of experiments were pretest-posttest designed. The research subjects were 122 inpatients in the acute psychiatric ward of a medical center. The experimental group received 50 minutes of a group music therapy intervention every Wednesday and Friday for a total of 8 times over 4 weeks. The control group received routine care. Both groups were administered the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) pretest and posttest. Results: For the experimental group, the music therapy intervention showed a significant reduction in both depression (p <.001) and anxiety (p <.001). Implications for practice: The results of this study provide an empirical basis for the use of group music therapy as an intervention to reduce depression and anxiety in in-patients with mental illness. It is suggested that mental health care professionals may find music therapy helpful in routine group therapy programs to reduce depression and anxiety symptoms in acute psychiatric in-patients.
