Trigeminal neuralgia is caused by lesions of the fifth cranial nerve, the trigeminal nerve. In Taiwan, the incidence rate of trigeminal neuralgia is approximately 4 to 5 per 100,000 person-years. Daily activities such as lightly touching sensitive areas with the fingers can trigger trigeminal neuralgia. If trigeminal neuralgia occurs suddenly during a flight, it can have a significant impact on flight safety. The main treatment for this condition include medications (carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine) and surgery (microvascular decompression surgery). Currently, the Republic of China Air Force Aviation Medical Manual do provide aeromedical regulations related to neuralgia. The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also has guidelines include waiver requirements for trigeminal neuralgia . Here, we discuss and summarize the aeromedical and waiver considerations of trigeminal neuralgia.
