Transforming Tibetan Experiences and Buddhist Thought in Narratives of Life, Death, Emotions, and Healing: A Study of Chung Wen-yin's "Farewell" and "Destined: The Tale of Kamutsa and the Wandering Monk"

In 2021, Chung Wen-yin (born 1969, Yunlin) received grants from the National Culture and Arts Foundation for her novel "Farewell" and the inaugural "Long Historical Fiction Writing Project" for "Destined: The Tale of Kamutsa and the Wandering Monk," which was published in 2022. Throughout her career, the author has often explored themes of female emotions, mother-daughter relationships, and family history. However, in these two novels, she delves deeper into the themes of life and death, drawing from her personal experience of caring for her ailing mother and incorporating her past travels and guiding experiences in Tibet. She blends thoughts on mortality and Buddhist rituals into her narratives, particularly evident in "Destined," where she incorporates Tibetan Buddhist historical figures and imagines their emotional worlds through Buddhist principles and rites of passage. This paper sequentially addresses the following questions: First, how do these two novels utilize Buddhist thought as a path to navigate the suffering of illness, death, and emotions, leading to healing? Second, exploring how both novels transform their Tibetan experiences into significant narrative backgrounds and materials, how do they echo or extend each other narratively? Through these discussions, the intention is to demonstrate how Chung Wen-yin's incorporation of Buddhist elements in addressing themes of life, death, and emotions unfolds a new depth in Taiwan's literature and religious writing.
