Dr. Hann-Chorng Kuo is a surgeon at Tzu-Chi Hospital in Hualien. In his career in a Buddhist hospital, Kuo developed a religious faith, had close encounters with people's sufferings, and strengthened his faith through people's sufferings. Kuo's life narrative gives us an insight into the Tzu-Chi medical system's founding intentions, which are rooted in Master Cheng Yen's compassion and her universal love for all life forms, as well as the philosophy of Patient Centricity. Therefore, being a doctor is not just about equipping with professional skills in medical treatment but also about caring for people to the fullest extent. And by doing so, a doctor will broaden his horizons and soften his heart. From the transformation of Dr. Hann-Chorng Kuo: from being a conventional surgeon to being a "medical practitioner of the people", we can see that his medical practices not only manifest a different kind of implementation of "Discipline, Meditation, and Wisdom" but also can be viewed as a midway on the bodhisattva path.
