Over the past years, the media environment in Taiwan has become more partisan and polarized. Yet, the consequences of such a partisan media environment have remained empirically under-explored. This paper aims to fill this gap by arguing that exposure to partisan media biases citizens' perceptions of political parties' policy stances, leading them to perceive media-opposed parties as more extreme on the policy spectrum. Focusing on the independence-unification issue, we empirically test the above argument using four waves of Taiwan's Election and Democratization Study (TEDS) survey data and reveal robust evidence consistent with our expectations. We find that exposure to partisan media makes voters perceive media-opposed parties as more extreme on the independence-unification scale, particularly among those who do not identify with the party. Our findings not only shed light on the impact of partisan media, but also contribute to our understanding of political competition and mass behavior in Taiwan.
