Ying-Yang Power Principle: Decoding the Underlying Principles of Victory in "The Art of War"

This article is an inquiry into the underlying principles of victory which guide the overall arguments of Sun Tzu's The Art of War (AOW). The relations among the three core concepts of AOW, namely, the Tangible Strength, TS (xing), the Potential Energy Power, P (shi), the Fragility and Solidity, FS (xushi) are redefined, and a key intermediate variable, the Intangible Opportunity, ITO ( ji) is introduced. A Ying-Yang Power Principle (xingji chengshi; YYP, where the Ying stands for the ITO, and the Yang the TS) is drawn from the inquiry process; and the YYP Principle conceptually integrates the three key variables TS, ITO and P into one equation, i.e., P= TS X ITO, where the P is the measurement of the FS, and FS is, in turn, the criteria of victory. The authors reviewed the entire text of 13 chapters in AOW and argued that ITO is a concept implicit in Sun Tzu's works. This article further derives five corollaries from the YYP Principle to enhance its operability.
