The Battle of Chosin Reservoir, which took place in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula in November 1950, was an important battle during the Korean War and one of the few examples in military history where a successful breakthrough was achieved. The Chosin Reservoir is located in northern North Korea, which is about 100 kilometers from the border with China (Yalu River). It is characterized by its cold weather all year around and rugged terrain, making it unfavorable for large-scale armored operations but favorable for infantry operations. Despite being outnumbered in the ratio of three to one by "the Chinese People's Volunteer Army" during this battle, which aimed to envelop and annihilate the US-lead United Nations forces in the vicinity of the Chosin Reservoir, the U.S. forces were able to leverage either superiority in sea and air power and demonstrate their courageous fighting spirit to successfully break through. This achievement is worthy of our admiration and study. This research illustrates how the U.S. and Chinese forces exploited their strengths and targeted the enemy's weaknesses during the battle. By analyzing strategic, operational, and tactical levels and equipment, the author provides seven recommendations for our defense operations such as enhancing the protection of critical infrastructures.
