Objectives: This study used a questionnaire and statistical analysis to explore the reasons for breast pain during mammographic examination. Methods: From November 2011 to December 2011, 46 women received screening mammography and filled out a questionnaire about breast pain during the mammographic examination. Out of the 46 women, 20 of them were given mammographic instructions before the mammographic examination. Results: The statistical analysis showed that the breast pain scale scores were higher among women who remembered experiencing breast pain previously during a mammographic examination. Conclusions: By providing women appropriate health education or notice of a mammographic examination in advance, together with a genuine and friendly attitude by the mammographer during the process, will lower during the mammography the fear associated with the procedure and the anticipation of breast pain. Nevertheless, the degree of subjective sensation of breast pain during mammographic examination seems to be significantly related to the women's remembered prior experiences.
